Great Plumbing Tips You Can Do On Your Own

By Chris Dixon

A good home should have a quality plumbing system. Sometimes, your plumbing needs attention and you may not be able to afford a plumber or it may be a bad time to call one. The following article provides you with hints and tips that can help you update, maintain and repair your home's plumbing system.

If you possess pipes that are alive with the sound of squeaking or hammering, you have an issue that is easily corrected. What you will have to do is anchor any pipes that are exposed. You might want to contact a professional when the pipes are hard to access.

If you have a frozen pipe, turn on the nearest faucet so the water has an escape route when the pipe starts to thaw. This reduces pressure to keep the pipe from bursting, which could prevent a big mess in your home.

Don't use harsh chemicals such as toilet tablets in your toilet. These tablets have chemicals that can damage rubber parts that are essential to the proper functioning of your toilet.

Wait until a job is done before you pay for it. You may have to pay a portion of the cost before the plumber works on the job, but you should never have to pay in full until after everything has been correctly finished. You should know the plumber did his job before you pay him.

Do not pour grease or other oils in your sink or down your drain. Grease hardens when it cools and will clog your pipes. If the sink has a garbage disposal, it will also make the blades less efficient. Make certain you dispose of all oils in other places other than the sink.

You can greatly extend the life of your garbage disposal by regularly cleaning it. By regularly incorporating a routine using a combination of dish soap, lemon rinds, and even cherry pits, you can keep your disposal running smoothly and smelling as fresh as the day it was installed.

A sink hose that is installed incorrectly will lead to water flowing into the dishwasher. The hose going from the dishwasher to the sink needs to angle uphill before going back downhill to prevent water from both being mixed.

Don't use your toilet as a trash can in order to avoid problems. Do not flush things like paper towels, sanitary pads, tissues, diapers, cotton balls or anything else that might cause the toilet to get clogged. Even keep toilet paper use to the minimum necessary.

With plumbing, there are various techniques you can use to improve and repair your system. Plumbing differs from home to home, so apply what you know to what you have. We hope that the tips here gave you a place to start honing you skills for your plumbing system.
